Stained Glass in Saint Paul’s

The Small East Window (6)

The Crucifixion

This five-part window shows a crowned Jesus on the Cross, between the sun and the moon, supported by angels, with angels in the two lights above him, and S Mary Magdalene at his feet.

His mother is in blue at his right hand side, accompanied by Mary the wife of Cleophas and  Mary the mother of James and Joseph (or Jose), or the mother of the sons of Zebedee, or Joanna, depending on which Gospel is followed.

To the left of Jesus is S John, the beloved disciple, accompanied by S Joseph of Arimathæa and the centurion, Longinus, who carries a sword rather than the spear that pieced the side of Jesus, with which he is usually associated.
