S Paul’s in Context

Back to Church People

S Paul’s, has always had close links with the neighbouring Anglo-Catholic parishes.

Currently, Fr Robert Fayers SSC, the vicar of S Michael & All Angels, has been appointed by the Bishop to be the Parish Priest and Surrogate.

The church of S Michael & All Angels (1862) was initially linked by its first priest having been a curate at S. Paul's for 11 years under Fr. Arthur Wagner. The churches of The Annunciation (1864) and S Bartholomew's (1872), like S Paul's, are under the patronage of the Wagner Trustees and in early days were served by priests from S Paul's.

Other churches of the same tradition with whom there have long been close links include S Barnabas, Hove, and S Martin's, Brighton, which was founded by Fr. Arthur Wagner and his family in memory of their father, Fr. Henry Wagner. S Paul’s also has close relations with S Patrick’s. Neighbouring churches include S Nicholas and the Chapel Royal.

Safe Space

S Paul’s has dedicated the Holy Spirit Chapel to be used by the local police, emergency and support charity services to operate as a Safe Space, at night during critical weekends and holiday periods throughout the year. This initiative offers support to disoriented or distressed revellers in West Street. This has helped a variety of mainly young people, overcome with excitement, alcohol or drugs.
