{"id":1059,"date":"2021-01-18T16:37:38","date_gmt":"2021-01-18T16:37:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/?page_id=1059"},"modified":"2021-01-18T17:18:37","modified_gmt":"2021-01-18T17:18:37","slug":"great-west-window","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/?page_id=1059","title":{"rendered":"Great West Window"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">Stained Glass in Saint Paul\u2019s<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/?page_id=913\">\u25c4 return to Stained Glass<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong><strong><strong>The Great West Window (13)<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-normal-font-size\"><strong><strong>Upper tier<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><font color=\"red\">T<\/font>he Great West Window displays two tiers of figures, each in long canopies with geometrical gothic decoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On either side of the Holy Family are the two Evangelists who are not depicted in the windows of the Chancel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S Luke<\/strong> is shown with a quill and a winged bull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Blessed Virgin Mary<\/strong>, is making a gesture of humility and is holding a book, perhaps to signify her great song, the Magnificat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our Lord<\/strong>, is holding a book, perhaps of judgement or of the New Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S Joseph <\/strong>is holding a lily to signify purity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>S Mark <\/strong>is shown with a quill and a winged lion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"464\" height=\"551\" src=\"http:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/13-WextWindow.png\" alt=\"West Window\" class=\"wp-image-1063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/13-WextWindow.png 464w, https:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/13-WextWindow-253x300.png 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-normal-font-size\"><strong><strong>Lower tier<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Fr Wagner changed his mind about this selection of saints associated with S Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>S Timothy<\/strong>, S Paul\u2019s \u201cbeloved son in faith\u201d, is shown as bishop of Ephesus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>S Barnabas<\/strong>, a native of Cyprus, introduced S Paul to the Apostles and so led him to the church.&nbsp; He is holding some stones which usually refer to S Stephen, whose death by stoning S Paul witnessed.&nbsp; S Stephen the deacon was included in the original designs for this window, so perhaps only the name was changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>S Paul<\/strong>, like Our Lord, faces directly forward.&nbsp; He holds a book of his epistles and the sword of his martyrdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>S Matthais<\/strong> was chosen to take the place of Judas Iscariot and was the last Apostle appointed before S Paul. He holds the pole axe which martyred him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><strong>S Titus<\/strong> was another favourite of S Paul.
