{"id":530,"date":"2021-01-08T11:17:43","date_gmt":"2021-01-08T11:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/?page_id=530"},"modified":"2025-07-14T13:10:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T12:10:42","slug":"burne-jones-triptich","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.saintpaulschurch.org.uk\/?page_id=530","title":{"rendered":"Burne-Jones Triptich"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><font color=\"red\">I<\/font>n 1861 Fr Wagner commissioned the twenty-seven-year-old Edward Burne-Jones, who was living in Rottingdean at the time, to paint a picture go go behind the High Altar of S Paul\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A picture in this position is called a <strong>reredos<\/strong>. It was painted in three&nbsp; parts, so is a triptych.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme is the <strong>Incarnation of Jesus<\/strong>. On either side were the two participants of the <strong>Annunciation<\/strong>, the Angel Gabriel on the left and the Blessed Virgin on the right. This is the start of the story of the Incarnation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subject in the centre was the <strong>Adoration of the Magi<\/strong>, when Mary presented the Infant Jesus to the Gentiles, represented by the Wise Men. He could not afford the best paints and the student\u2019s mixture of oils has made the cleaning and maintenance of this picture a scholar\u2019s nightmare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years the triptych graced the High Altar of S Paul\u2019s but in 1977 it was lent to the Brighton Museum, when the church could no longer afford to insure it against theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1994 it was sold at Sotheby\u2019s to a private buyer.
