NOTICES 9 November 2025
REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Mass today (9 November) begins at 10.55am with the customary Act of Remembrance. Please be aware that buses may still be disrupted by road works around the Old Steine so you may need extra time to get in to church.
PRAYING THE HOLY ROSARY We gather on Monday 10 November at 6pm at St Bart’s to pray together the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.
ST MARTIN’S PATRONAL FESTIVAL We gather with our friends at St Martin’s, Lewes Road for their Patronal Festival, with Solemn Mass beginning at 7pm on Tuesday 11 November at which Fr Thomas will be preaching. Please do join in the celebrations and support our sister parish. Mass will be said at St Bart’s at the earlier time of 12 noon on this day.
RAFFLE & SHERRY SUNDAY The monthly raffle for this month will take place after Mass next Sunday (16 November).
UPCOMING CONCERT Our very own Sasha, who sings in our choir, will be hosting a concert here at St Paul’s at 6pm on Saturday 22 November (St Cecilia’s Day – the Patroness of Music), featuring music from Gustav Holst as well as some Japanese and Indian folk song. No tickets need to be bought for this, but a donation of £5 per person is suggested that will go towards church funds. Please do make a note of this and come along if you can.
CHRIST THE KING On Sunday 23 November, the last Sunday of the liturgical year, we keep the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. At the end of Mass, we will as normal for this day have a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament, concluding with Benediction.
CHRISTMAS GRAND DRAW If you would like to make a donation to the raffle that will be drawn after Mass on Sunday 14 December, gift cards or tokens are preferred. Please give these, together with any completed draw books, to Susan.
ADULT BAPTISM & CONFIRMATION Fr Thomas is in discussions with Bishop Will about coming to one of our churches on a Sunday before Christmas. It would be useful, then, for anyone who wishes to be baptised and/or confirmed to speak with Fr Thomas as soon as possible.
AISLE LIGHTING UPGRADE The lighting in the north and south aisles has recently been upgraded, costing £2,100. As was said last Sunday, a member of our church family made a donation that left £1,000 to be paid. It is fantastic that since then a donation of £1,000 has been made from within our family of faith, so the cost of this work has been covered at no expense to church funds. Do be encouraged by this generosity to continue to give yourselves as God blesses us here.
MASS INTENTIONS For those of you who attend Mass on a weekday, you will know that we have a specific intention that we offer at the altar. Sometimes, a priest will be asked to offer Mass for a person’s own private intention, perhaps someone close to them who is unwell or who is departed, including on the anniversary of death. If ever you would like a Mass to be offered for a personal intention, do speak to Fr Thomas.
PLAQUE IN HONOUR OF PAMELA JAMES Some of you may have seen the plaque that has recently been put in the Narthex to give thanks for all that Pamela gave to this church family, not least the substantial legacy left as part of her estate. May she rest in peace and may her example inspire us in turn to be generous with our time, talents and money.
FUNERAL PLANS Fr Thomas has lately met with several parishioners to discuss their funeral plans and to be given a record for safe keeping for when the time comes. Having something in writing not only gives us peace of mind but can also help those who will make such arrangements happen, especially if they are not familiar with what a Christian funeral comprises. If, then, you would appreciate the chance to meet with him, please do be in touch.
CHURCH WATCHING We are incredibly blessed here at St Paul’s to be able to have our church building open for several hours each Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. This is only possible thanks to the selflessness of our team of church watchers, two of whom are always on duty when the building is open to the public. It would be good to expand this team, and so if you might be able to give some of your time to the very worthwhile cause of enabling more people to experience the beauty of holiness here, please have a word with Fr Thomas. Even if you feel you can only give time on an irregular basis, perhaps to cover one of our existing team being on holiday, your contribution would be much appreciated.
APPEAL FROM OUR FOOD BANK Our city’s food bank is in considerable need of more donations. We have been asked to flag the particular need for tinned meat, fish, tomato and vegetables as well as pasta, rice, tinned fruit, tinned desserts and instant coffee. Supporting the needy is an integral part of our Christian discipleship, so if you can offer some help, please take your donations to the food bank, which is located at the Calvary Church, BN1 4NJ. Alternatively, if you wish to donate a sum of money for the food bank to then spend on what they need, you can do so using the link: http://www.brightonfoodbank.org.uk/how-can-you-help/.
